Mandate

The Department of Peace and Solidarity is committed to advancing human security, reconciliation, and social cohesion in regions affected by displacement, conflict, and identity-based tensions. Its mandate is to foster peaceful coexistence, dignity, and solidarity, particularly in contexts where forced migration, statelessness, and radicalization challenge regional stability

In the Bay of Bengal region, the department prioritizes the Rohingya refugee crisis as a pressing humanitarian and security issue, while also working on deradicalization and community resilience to prevent cycles of extremism and violence.

Strategic Focus Areas

1. Rohingya Refugee Crisis and Human Security
  • Conduct research and advocacy on the plight of the Rohingya people in Bangladesh, Myanmar, and across the region
  • Support durable solutions: safe repatriation, regional resettlement, and improved camp governance
  • Highlight the humanitarian-development-peace (HDP) nexus, ensuring refugees are integrated into host community resilience planning
  • Strengthen access to education, healthcare, and livelihoods to reduce vulnerability and dependency.
2. Deradicalization and Preventing Violent Extremism (PVE)
  • Research the drivers of radicalization among marginalized and displaced populations, including youth.
  • Develop community-based deradicalization programs focused on education, vocational training, and psycho-social support.
  • Partner with religious leaders, educators, and civil society to counter extremist narratives with peace and solidarity messaging.
  • Promote digital literacy and media monitoring to reduce online radicalization risks.
3. Social Cohesion and Community Solidarity

  • Promote international responsibility-sharing in line with the Global Compact on Refugees (GCR).
